What is the best thickness for my glass table top size?

When selecting a glass table top, ideally, you should avoid anything too thin – and, of course, only use toughened glass. If the glass isn’t strong enough for the intended use, it may crack under pressure, which is why glass table tops should be a minimum of 6mm thick.

At The Glass Warehouse, all made-to-measure glass table tops are manufactured with toughened glass for safety. We provide glass tops in several thicknesses, ranging from 6mm to 15mm – and possibly 19mm, by special request only.

The larger the glass table top size, and the heavier the intended use, the thicker the glass should be. For example, a coffee table or sideboard can be thinner, as it only has to bear the weight of various dishes and cups. Meanwhile, a glass top for an office desk would need to be thicker, as various technological equipment is likely to be used on it.

If you need advice on the right table top size or require a bespoke thickness or finish for your glass table top, don’t hesitate to speak with our team about these details.

What glass is used for table tops?

There is a wide range of glass types that are suitable for table tops, but for a glass table top that can withstand use and pressure, we recommend opting for toughened safety glass in an appropriate thickness for the type of table and its location.

Not only will this ensure your table remains safe and useable and that the glass table top is robust, but it will also provide a higher level of safety in the unlikely case of it breaking.

This is because safety glass, when broken, comes away in small blunt pieces with a duller edge. This can significantly reduce the risk of harm, as it is much safer than standard glass, which shatters into sharp and jagged pieces.

It’s especially important to ensure safety if accidental breakages happen in settings like bars and cafes, which is why toughened glass tabletops are preferred for restaurant furniture.

Here at The Glass Warehouse, we provide a range of toughened glass table top options to our customers, including clear and low-iron glass, anti-sun tinted glass, satin glass, or crackle glass.

So, whatever your requirements, we can help you to choose the right glass for your table top!

What are the benefits of a glass table top?

If you’re considering buying a glass table top, then the chances are that you already know about the wealth of benefits they offer.

However, if you’re unsure whether a glass table top is right for you, consider these advantages:

1) Low-maintenance – Glass is famously easy to clean, making it an excellent choice for busy households, as all you have to do is wipe it down to keep glass surfaces looking good as new.

2 ) Opens up space – Glass fixtures and fittings around the home can help to open up the area, creating the illusion that it’s larger than it really is, which is a great option for smaller rooms.

3) Stylish – Of course, glass table tops are highly attractive, with a unique visual appeal that makes them ideal for a range of homes, thanks to their clean and minimalist look that can fit in anywhere.

4) Versatile – Whether you want to offset or match certain decor, you can customise your glass top to fit whichever bases or supports you choose and to suit any style or colour scheme.

5) Durable – If you want a robust table top that can withstand scratches and stains, then toughened glass table tops are the ideal investment to help extend the life of your furniture.

Where can you use toughened glass table tops?

It’s possible to install toughened glass table tops anywhere you might use a table – whether indoors or outdoors, they can quickly elevate a space by adding both an elegant and practical touch at the same time.

This could be in the form of a desk, a dresser, a coffee table, a kitchen table, an outdoor dining table, a sideboard in a hallway, a bedside table – even restaurant tables for cafes or bars. There are countless possibilities, but you get the idea!

You could use a glass table top for a brand new custom table, or upcycle an older piece of furniture, updating it with an ultra-clear glass top or a stylised tinted glass top.

They can also be used as a glass table cover – for example, on top of a traditional wooden table to give it a more modern look.

We deliver made-to-order toughened glass table tops in a variety of shapes, thicknesses, and finishes, with custom cut-outs, drilled holes, radius or dubbed corners, and even polymer coatings available – so speak to The Glass Warehouse to discover your ideal glass table top.

We offer delivery across the majority of the mainland UK, so you can use our glass tops almost anywhere. Please note, however, that delivery times can vary from 10 to 25 working days, which will depend on your location and the level of customisation in your order.

Do you offer laminate table tops?

As you may have noticed, the table top materials listed on this page include different types of toughened glass, but laminate glass is not an option.

However, we do stock laminate glass at The Glass Warehouse, for sale separately in the form of toughened laminated glass. This is much thicker glass made by combining a pair of toughened glass panels into one by sealing them together with a plastic interlayer.

The middle layer supports the structure by keeping the glass on either side in place even if it cracks into pieces, preventing it from shattering everywhere. This makes laminate table tops much safer for heavy-duty furniture, perhaps in a busy public establishment.

Toughened laminate glass comes with a polished edge, but unfortunately, you cannot change the colour, as we currently do not offer laminated tinted glass or laminated frosted glass.

The thickness you’ll need to choose for toughened laminate table tops will depend on the size of the table, as explained in the FAQs above, but we can deliver this type of glass in thicknesses from 10.8mm up to 32mm.
