Should I use foil backing for bathroom mirrors?

It is typically recommended that foil backing is applied to all mirrors in order to protect the silvering from deterioration. However, when it comes to fitting mirrors in bathrooms, this protective mirror backing becomes even more important.

In damp environments where moisture can build up, like bathrooms or kitchens, water and mineral deposits can have a direct impact on the quality of the glass mirror. Gathering moisture and corrosive salt can cause gradual erosion and rust.

By simply applying a foil backing, you can protect the glass from being affected as easily by water and minerals, making your investment go much further.

Will clear backing stop mirrors from breaking?

Custom-made mirrors with safety backing applied are typically much sturdier in the face of impact. Made from polypropylene, the backing is applied on the underside of the mirror paint and serves as a barrier that can withstand most of the pressure if an impact were to occur.

Safety backings can not only prevent a mirror face from breaking, but can also reduce the risk of injury from shards of glass by holding the pieces in place.

However, it is important to bear in mind that whilst clear backing can help to save your mirror from breaking, it cannot guarantee it. Applying clear backing will undoubtedly strengthen the surface of the mirror, but if an impact is strong enough, your mirror could still be damaged or break entirely.

This is why it’s still so important to hang your bespoke mirror carefully and avoid impacts, even if it comes with a safety layer on the back.
